Nigel Power is a British-born, Bangkok-based artist, academic and designer. His
creative practice explores the potential of algorithmic process in the creation of
imagery – animated and static – and other, non-visual media. His work spans print,
video, interactive and installation art. During the past year or so, he has exhibited
pieces in Bangkok, Seoul, Yekaterinberg, Singapore & Shanghai. He is currently the
program leader of the MfA in Communication Design at King Mongkut’s University of technology Thonburi, a public university located to the south of Bangkok.

Becoming Limerick is part of an ongoing exploration of ambient, algorithmic and
algorithmic cinema. The work comprises a large-scale projection of animated imagery.
This is generated by a series of simple algorithms designed by the artist. These
'drawing engines' take graphic primitives and transform them repeatedly using a combination of regular and random variables – 'stamping' the resulting forms onto the projection surface to create increasingly complex and intricate forms suggestive of geometric and/ or natural objects. Simultaneously, the generative process also
produces an ambient sound field that interacts with the imagery to establish the
ambience of the piece. Once a sequence has exhausted itself (by ‘whiting’ out the
screen), others are selected and projected by the system; the cycle renews itself, it
begins again.
